Star Wars fans were sent into a frenzy as
studio giant Disney revealed the title of
the iconic franchise’s seventh episode —
The Force Awakens — and said filming
The Force Awakens immediately shot to
the top of trending topics on Twitter after
Walt Disney Pictures and the official Star
Wars account released the title.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has
completed principal photography,” the
tweets said, with the new title set in the
franchise’s retro-style typeface in yellow
and white against a background of stars.
The film will now require months of
post-production before its worldwide
release scheduled for December 18, 2015.
It is directed by J J Abrams, one of
Hollywood ’s A-list directors who recently
oversaw the successful rebooting of the
Star Trek franchise.
Star Wars has attracted generations of
loyal fans ever since the first film arrived
in 1977 recounting the adventures of
Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth
Filming began in Britain in May on the
Original cast members Harrison Ford,
Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony
Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny
Baker will star in the new film, along
with several newcomers including Oscar
winner Lupita Nyong’o.
Filming on the new movie was not
without hiccups — in June, the 72-year-
old Ford broke his leg on the set when a
garage door fell and hit him at Pinewood
Studios outside London.
Ford is back as smuggler Solo, the
62-year-old Hamill will return as Jedi
Knight Skywalker and Fisher, 57, reprises
the role of Princess Leia.
Other cast members include Max
von Sydow, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley,
Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis
and Domhnall Gleeson. The movie’s
screenplay is written by Lawrence Kasdan
The original 1977-83 trilogy — A New
Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and
Return of the Jedi — was followed by a
prequel trilogy between 1999 and 2005:
The Phantom Menace, Attack of the
Clones and Revenge of the Sith.
The two previous trilogies inspired
spin-off books, comics, toys, videogames
and cartoons — earning $US4.4 billion.

A man surrendered in Oregon after police
say he killed his girlfriend, posted gruesome
photos of her body and the crime scene on-
line, and wrote that he wanted authorities to
David Kalac’s arrest yesterday nearly 320km
from the crime scene in Washington state
came after a day-long manhunt.
He’s accused of killing Amber Lynn Coplin,
whose teenage son heard the couple loudly
arguing and then found his mother dead in
Kalac, 33, sent a text message to a friend
on Wednesday to say he would read about
Kalac in the news, then evaded police in the
woman’s stolen car until he emerged from
a wooded area and turned himself in to a
passing police officer, authorities said.
Authorities confirmed the grisly on-line
photos were of Coplin, 30, and the crime
scene, Scott Wilson, a sheriff ’s deputy, said.
The images appeared on 4chan, an
on-line bulletin board whose free-wheeling
and anonymous nature has led to some
of the web’s darker moments. Earlier this
year, hundreds of private pictures of nude
celebrities were posted on the site.
Kalac is the sole suspect, so investigators
believe he shared the photos, commented
on-line about how the woman was killed and
wrote of planning to be fatally shot by police,
The suspect yesterday gave himself up to
an officer patrolling the area around a transit
centre in Oregon, about 32km south of
“He basically said, ‘I have a warrant for my
arrest,”’ sheriff ’s sergeant Nate Thompson
said in a telephone inter view. Kalac was
co-operative but provided no details about
how he got to Wilsonville, the spokesman
Kalac was charged with second-degree
murder and was held in Portland on
$US2 million bail. Washington state
detectives aim to inter view him and pick
up the slain woman’s car, a 2001 Ford Focus
found yesterday in Portland, about 257km
south of the crime scene.
Wilson said he expected an autopsy of
Coplin’s body to be conducted today.
Police say they found Coplin’s body in a
bedroom after her 13-year-old son discovered
her that day.
Near her head was her driver’s licence with
the word “dead” written on it. “Bad news” was
written on blinds. And the words “she killed
me first ” were scrawled on a picture on the

The Force Awakens — new Star Wars film named
Director J J Abrams on the set of the new Star Wars film, the name of which was today
revealed as The Force Awakens.
Nothing is going gold’s way.
Inflation remains tame, the dollar looks
strong and Americans are increasingly
confident. Even fears that the Federal
Reser ve would set off another financial crisis
have faded as the central bank ends its effort
to pump money into the economy.
In short, all of the reasons for buying gold
over recent years have disappeared, helping to
drive prices for the metal to a four-year low.
Gold dropped $US22 to settle at
$US1145.70 an ounce yesterday, the lowest
finish for the precious metal since April 2010.
US stocks, meanwhile, hover near all-time
The metal’s popularity peaked in the
aftermath of the financial crisis. After seeing
their savings wiped out, people rushed to
investments considered safe, places where
they could stash their money and count on
getting it back.
Gold, along with US government bonds,
carried a bullet-proof reputation.
The metal peaked at $US1923 an ounce in
August 2011, right after Standard and Poors
stripped the US of its top credit rating.
But thanks to a stable dollar and weak
inflation, gold has been on a long and steady
decline ever since. Over the past year, for
instance, the dollar index, which measures
the greenback against other major currencies,
picked up 9%. Inflation crept up 1.7%.
Meanwhile, gold lost 13%.
At the height of the gold rush, financial
advisors told clients they could put between
5% and 10% of their savings in the metal,

Russian President Vladimir Putin has
ridiculed an Australian-backed regional
trade deal as an attempt by America to
further its own interests.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott and US
President Barack Obama will discuss the
ambitious Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)
trade deal with other regional leaders
at the APEC summit in Beijing next
Mr Putin said the TPP talks had been
held “behind closed doors” for almost
five years and the public have no access to
Statements about the strong progress of
the talks had been refuted, he said.
“O bviously, the Trans-Pacific Partnership
is just another US attempt to build
an architecture of regional economic
cooperation that the USA would benefit
from,” Mr Putin said in an interview with
leading Chinese media this week before he
leaves for the Beijing summit.
“At the same time, I believe that the
absence of two major regional players such
as Russia and China in its composition
will not promote the establishment
Mr Putin said he would instead back a
Chinese-led “road map” towards an Asia-
Pacific free trade zone, a draft of which will
be discussed at APEC.
He said multilateral trade in the Asia-
Pacific region could only be strong “if the
interests of all states of the region are taken
into account ”.
“This approach is reflected in the draft of
the Beijing road map,” he said.
The TPP will cover almost 40% of the
world’s economies and set boundaries for
global commerce between 12 countries.
