The world’s tallest and shortest men
have come face to face — well, face to
shin — to celebrate the 10th annual
Guinness World Records Day.
The little and large act met as people
across the globe tried to break all
manner of weird and wacky world
records, including banging heads,
catching spears and throwing thongs.
Turkey ’s Sultan Kosen, who stands
2.51m tall, met with Chandra
Bahadur Dangi from Nepal, who
measures 55cm tall.
Kosen, a 31-year-old farmer, stooped
down to shake hands with 74-year-
old Dangi opposite the Houses of
Parliament in London.
“I was very interested how tall he
was going to be, about how far up my
legs he would go, and of course once
I saw him I realised how tiny he was,”
He said meeting Chandra was
“amazing”, although he admitted
bending the long, long way down for
photographs was difficult.
“Even though he is short and I am
tall, we have had similar struggles
throughout our lives and when I look
into Chandra’s eyes I can see he is a
Meanwhile Dangi, a primordial
dwarf who makes placemats and head
straps for villagers carrying heavy
loads, is the shortest adult to have
ever been verified by Guinness World
“ I was very pleased to see the tallest
man in the world. I was curious to
meet my extreme opposite,” he said.

The leader of the Islamic State
group said it will fight to the last
man, in a strident audio recording
released overnight that was his
first public statement since a
US-led alliance launched airstrikes
against his fighters in Iraq and
The statement was posted on-
line six days after Iraqi officials
said that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
was wounded in an airstrike in
Iraq. It was not clear whether the
recording was made before or after
In the 17-minute recording,
al-Baghdadi vowed to fight the
“crusader campaign” to the bitter
“God has ordered us to fight,” he
said. “For that reason the soldiers
of the Islamic State are fighting ...
they will never leave fighting, even
if only one soldier remains. They
will never leave fighting, because
they reject humiliation.”
The recording, released on
social media networks, appeared
authentic, and the voice appeared
to match that in previous
recordings released by the group.

Police and firefighters are hunting
for a tiger on the loose near Paris
after a local resident spotted the
animal in a car park and sounded the
alert, authorities say.
Backed up by a helicopter,
firefighters armed with tranquilising
guns combed the area in the Seine-
Authorities ordered residents to
stay inside and children were kept
at school, as several people came
for ward saying they had seen the
tiger on the prowl.
“ We are calling on inhabitants to
be careful, not to leave their houses
and to stay in their vehicles,” town
hall official Cedric Tartaud-Gineste
He said that a security perimeter
covering an area about the size of
four or five football pitches had been
set up around a wooded area near
the small town of Montevrain, some
40km east of Paris.
A woman spotted the animal in a
supermarket car park in Montevrain
“My wife saw it this morning,” Jean-
Baptiste Berdeaux, who manages the
Intermarche supermarket, said.
“S he didn’t get out of the car and
called me to say, ‘I think I saw a
lynx’,” he said, adding she took a
photo of the animal and the couple
then alerted nearby police officers.
Authorities said they were hoping
to catch the animal alive.
“If it ’s possible, we’ ll try and put it
to sleep. If it becomes dangerous or
aggressive, the order will be given to
kill it,” police said.

A vicious, hate-filled letter written by
the FBI and sent to American civil rights
champion Martin Luther King has been
made public in full for the first time.
The single-paged anonymous letter
was sent to King in 1964, calling him a
“complete fraud and a great liability,” an
“e vil, abnormal beast,” and threatening
to expose his marital infidelities in an
apparent bid to make him commit
Heavily redacted copies of the letter
have circulated for years, but the New
York Times yesterday published the
note almost in its entirety, blanking out
a woman’s name.
The letter highlights the hostile attitude
the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
at the time run by J Edgar Hoover,
had toward King and the civil rights
According to the Times, it was written
by one of Hoover’s deputies, William
Sullivan, and was apparently sent along
with an audio recording containing
evidence of King ’s extramarital affairs.
“Listen to yourself you filthy, abnormal
animal,” the letter reads.
“ You have been on the record — all
your adulterous acts, your sexual orgies
extending far into the past. This one is
but a tiny sample.”
When King received the letter, he told
friends that someone wanted him to kill
himself, the Times reported.
The letter goes on to tell King: “ There
is only one thing left for you to do. You
know what it is,” an apparent exhortation
for him to kill himself.
The letter was crafted to make it appear
it came from someone within the civil
rights movement, making a reference to
“ us Negroes”.
The document provides a compelling
illustration of how deeply paranoid the

It took a set of retro-looking
images to reawaken the world’s sense
of wonder about space exploration.
The black-and-white pictures of a
rocky surface sent back from a comet
hundreds of millions of miles away
are the product of an astonishing feat
of science and some sophisticated
But for millions gazing at them
with excited awe, the response that
the dusty gray rocks and pitch-dark
shadows provoke is almost primal.
It is space as imagined in
childhood — “deep and dark, harsh
and alien” — and with the Philae
lander, humanity has made a fragile
foothold on it. That feeling is
perfectly captured in one image, an
interplanetary selfie, in which one of
the lander’s three feet is visible in the
corner of the shot.
To be sure, the science is
impressive. These crisp images have
come from 500 million kilometres
The washing machine-sized
lander has a close-up camera on its
underside and is also mounted with
seven high-definition micro-cameras,
each weighing just 100g, designed
to endure temperatures as low as
-150degC, and arranged to capture
360-degree panoramas of the comet ’s
But the world’s reaction is about
more than scientific appreciation.
The stark and elegant pictures cut
through the usual space-exploration
imagery of rockets and gadgets and
flashing lights and takes us back
to the early black-and-white sci-fi
movies many remember seeing.
A shot taken as the lander
descended makes the comet ’s surface
look like gray plasticine, and evokes

Moon, with its famous sequence of
a rocket zooming into the eye of the
man in the moon.
The flow of images is made more
precious by the sense that it may not
last. Scientists said overnight that

The Islamic State jihadist group
says it will start minting its own
gold, silver and copper coins for use
in areas under IS control in Syria
“God willing, coins of several types
will be minted from gold, silver
and copper,” IS said in a statement
distributed on jihadist forums
The aim was to replace “the
tyrannical currency system that was
imposed on the Muslims, and which
led to their oppression”.
The IS group says its circulation
of the new coins, to counter the

posted pictures of what the coins
will look like.
On one side, the words “Islamic
State” and “a caliphate following the
model of the Prophet (Mohammed)”
are engraved, as well as the weight
and value of the coin. On the other,
various symbols are used.
The five-dinar gold coin shows
a world map, while the Al-Aqsa
mosque in Jerusalem is portrayed on
the silver 10-dirham coin.
The crescent is embossed on one of
the copper coins, while three palm
trees are engraved on another.

dinar used today in some Muslim
countries, the ancient dinars were
made of pure gold and silver rather
than less precious metals.

populations in areas it controls,
