One of only six northern white
rhinoceros left on earth died over the
weekend at a San Diego zoo, bringing
the species closer to extinction, zoo
officials said overnight.
Angalifu, who was about 44 years
old and being treated for age-related
conditions, died yesterday, according to
the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

Northern white rhinos have been
nearly eliminated because of poaching
in Africa, the zoo said. None of those
remaining are reproductive.

A huge two-week operation by Interpol
in Central America and the Caribbean
has netted 27.5 tonnes of drugs.
The agency said overnight 50 illegal
drug labs and almost 20 jungle airstrips
were also destroyed as part of Lionfish II.
A semi-submersible boat and two
light aircraft used to transport drugs and
weapons were seized and 422 people were
Part of Interpol’s efforts to combat the
most violent organised crime groups
in the region, the operation ran from
December 1 to December 12 and
involved 39 countries and territories.
The drug haul included $US1.3 billion
of cocaine as well as large amounts of
cannabis and heroin.
Two unnamed individuals on Interpol’s
global most-wanted list were arrested in
the Dominican Republic and Peru for
arms and weapons trafficking.
About 100 weapons, 7.6 tonnes of
chemical precursors and $US2.2 million
in cash were also seized.

Authorities outside Philadelphia say six
people are dead and one is wounded in
multiple homes after a shooting, and the
suspect remains on the loose.
Montgomery County District Attorney
Risa Vetri Ferman identified the suspect
in the shootings as 35-year-old Bradley
William Stone. She says all of the victims
have a “familial relationship” to Stone.
Police officers have converged on a
home in Pennsburg, about 50km north-
west of Philadelphia. They were using a
megaphone today to compel an end to
their day-long pursuit of Stone.
“Bradley, this is the police department,”
an officer yelled. “Come to the front door
with your hands up. You’re under arrest.”
ABC television affiliate WPVI says
Stone is thought to be a military veteran.
The shootings occurred at three
different suburban locations.
Swat teams were called to a possible
fourth scene in Pennsburg.
Police have told WPVI the suspect is
barricaded inside a home in Souderton,
one of the sites where bodies were found.
Swat teams have taken up positions
outside the home.
The Souderton Area School District
posted a notice on its website that its
schools were on lockdown.
“All students are safe and are secured
in their classrooms. Visitors will not
be allowed in the schools until further
notice,” it says.
The first shooting was reported just
before 4am local time.
WPVI cited sources as saying all
victims — including at least one woman
— w ere shot at close range.
Ferman says Stone is known to use a
cane or walker to assist him.

Nearly 70 years after the end
