The Tranz Alpine Giveaway
Many people will have passed Arthur’s Pass village or
Springfield, filled up with petrol and then headed back on
their way. But both places are world-class destinations in
their own right. The TranzAlpine train stops in both Arthur’s
Pass and Springfield. Arthur’s Pass National Park is one of the
most spectacular alpine environments in New Zealand and
Springfield is the gateway to the Craigieburn Range.
The most obvious winter activities are skiing or snowboarding.
Whatever your ability there’s a ski area suitable for you. New
to the sport or haven’t been on snow in a while? Then, from
Springfield, head up to Porters Ski Area or Cheeseman. Porters
have just had a chairlift put in so you can be whisked up the
mountain in luxury. There are beginner packages at both ski
areas. From Springfield, Smylies Shuttles can transport you to
the mountains daily. There is a ski area pass, the Chill Pass, that
gives you access to all ski areas for 5, 7 and 10 days skiing.
What about if you’re an old hand and want a challenge? Then
Temple Basin is more your pace. It’s a 40 minute hike from the
carpark to the first rope tow lift and once you’re up there you’re
spoilt for choice with great hiking and touring options.
If you don’t fancy playing in the white stuff there’s plenty more
to do. From Springfield, with a short shuttle, you can take a
walk in Craigieburn Forest east of Arthur’s Pass village. There
are options from a short 2 hour walk all the way up to 2 day
tramps. There’s also the Kowai Bush walk near Springfield which
takes you through dense beech forest and over the railway line.
You’ll obviously need somewhere to stay and you’ve got loads
of options. In Springfield you’ve got Smylies Youth Hostel and
Springfield Motel & Lodge. In Arthur’s Pass you’re also spoilt for
choice but 2 options are to stay in the village at Base Camp or
The Sanctuary Backpackers.
After your fun-filled day and before hitting the hay you’re
going to need some refreshments. Head to The Bealey Hotel
for a beer and something to eat near Arthur’s Pass. If you’re
in Springfield head over to the Yello Shack Café and if you’re
catching the TranzAlpine check out Station 73 café which
serves great coffee. It’s also a visitor information centre so you
can get some more great tips on things to do.
