Greymouth martial arts exponent
Nick Reedy has earned international
accreditation as first dan in Kukkiwon
Taekwondo following grading two
Reedy has been training in martial
arts, including Taekwondo, for about
five years and decided to go for his first
dan in Kukkiwon as both a personal
achievement and the first step towards
ensuring the future of the Greymouth
Han Ma Um Olympic Taekwondo club.
Kukkiwon is the recognised
qualification under the World
In grading two weeks ago, Reedy and
his trainer Pete Dawson were both
awarded their first dan certificates —
first level black belt. Dawson’s certificate
recognised his knowledge and ser vices
to the sport over more than 15 years.
Reedy could only grade if he was
invited to do so after an assessment.
His grading instructor was senior
master Peter Shaw who is sixth dan,
and helped establish the sport in
Greymouth by bringing it under his
Han Ma Um club.
Reedy returned from the competition
battered and bruised after completing
40, 90-second rounds, but was glad to
have completed the first major step.
“ It was exciting, grading day. It was
really good and met my expectations.”
He was well prepared for grading,
having practised for at least 12 hours
a week for seven to eight months on
patterns, technical requirements and
“I was fit enough and well prepared.
As far as the 40 fights were concerned,
they were heavy hits and it took it out
of me. You can’t prepare for a fight like
About 30% of his body was covered in
deep bruising after wards.
Reedy said his success was a result
of a lot of support from the wider
Greymouth martial arts community,
fitness instructor Martin Greaney, the
RSA for allowing them use of the hall
to train and many more.
Reedy’s wife Deb, who hopes to
complete her grading within the next
12 months, said while grading was
tough and a lot of preparation had gone
into it, it was well worth it.
Each grading was tailored to the
individual: “ You are graded on what you
can do, not what you can’t.”
The Reedys took up Taekwondo about
five years ago because their son, now 12,
wanted to do it and started training at
the back of their home. Before long a
group of interested families had become
Nick Reedy said it was based on a
family-style club, with parents and
children training together. After losing
their trainer, Dawson joined the group
to help keep them on track.
He said the grading was an experience
they could go for ward from.
“ We are all passionate about it. We all
enjoy coming here. It is never a chore.”
The club now has 30 members, two-
thirds of them children. Classes are
held at the RSA Hall on Monday and
Wednesday for Kung Fu, and Tuesday
and Thursday for Taekwondo.

Ben Smith’s life after the All Blacks
has been placed above his potential
impact against the British and Irish
Lions, ruling him out of the rest of the
The influential New Zealand vice
captain suffered a head knock 27 minutes
into the first test win in Auckland on
Saturday and he did not return.
While results from concussion protocol
testing still are not in, All Blacks
management made the call to rule the
31-year-old out of both remaining tests.
Coach Steve Hansen noted Smith has
been sidelined by concussion twice in
this year’s Super Rugby campaign with
“ We’re just of the opinion that he’s
had a couple so let ’s just be a little bit
conser vative and not play him,” Hansen
“ Long-term concerns have been
allayed but we’re just going to take our
time with him and get him back where
we need him to be, so he’s comfortable
and we’re comfortable.”
Fellow-veteran outside back Israel
Dagg has been shifted to fullback for
Saturday’s second test in Wellington.
Also a father of a young family, Dagg
could relate to Smith’s plight and said
the right decision has been made.
“O bviously it’s a big series but at the
end of the day he’s got two little kids, a
beautiful wife and you’ve just got to make
those decisions. I said to him, we’ve all
only got one brain, so it ’s pretty simple,
we’ve all got to make good decisions.”
Smith is recuperating at home in
Dunedin but Dagg said the 62-test
veteran effectively remains part of the
He had already sent texts to Dagg and
other players with some thoughts about
the looming test.
“The whole team’s behind him,” Dagg
said. “It ’s only rugby at the end of the day.
We’ve got a life after footy that we’ve got
to worry about. Gone are the days where
you thought you were superman and you
just get up and run around.” — NZN
