A Franz Josef Glacier helicopter pilot's long
service to the community, and his actions after
a motor accident, resulted in him escaping a
careless driving conviction in the Greymouth
Stephen Robert Gibb, 59, while in Nelson,
failed to see a cyclist and turned his vehicle into
its path. e rider spent several days in hospital
as a result of the collision and his expensive bike
Gibb visited his victim in hospital to apologise,
paid for a new bike and was happy to cough up
an $800 emotional harm payment.
Judge Noel Walsh said Gibb had an otherwise
spotless record, had been decorated for bravery
for his helicopter rescue work and did not deser ve
the stain of a conviction.
" is is a man who has put his life on the line
for his community. He is discharged without
conviction," Judge Walsh said.

South Westland resident, Gavin Lewis Molloy,
was further remanded in the Greymouth District
Court until March 28 on charges of failing to
furnish tax returns.
When he appeared in October, Molloy's
company Callery Holdings Ltd faced four
charges of failing to furnish income tax returns
and Molloy faced 10 personal charges.
e court heard that Molloy had since led all
his personal returns, which resulted in refunds
of $4000, and he had hired an accountant to
complete the company returns.
Molloy said he had assumed that his partner in
Callery Holdings, who was an accountant, had
looked after the company's tax obligations.
He sought suppression of his details because a
previous court report had caused him "signi cant
loss of dignity".
Judge Noel Walsh declined the request, saying
that justice had to be open and transparent.
