Northern Ireland police have
charged a 43-year-old man with
the murders of 29 people in the
1998 Omagh bombing, the worst
single atrocity of the Troubles.
"Detectives from Serious
Crime Branch investigating the
1998 Omagh bombing have
charged a 43-year-old man with
the murders of the 29 people
who died in the explosion and
a number of other o ences,"
a Police Ser vice of Northern
Ireland (PSNI) statement said.
British media, including the
BBC, named the man as the
senior republican gure Seamus
Daly, from Culloville, County
He was arrested in the city of
Newry area on Monday, and
charged at Antrim police station
late last night.
"He faces 29 murder charges
relating to the blast on August
15, 1998, two charges in relation
to the Omagh explosion and
two charges in relation to an
attempted explosion in Lisburn
in April 1998 --- a total of
33 charges," PSNI said. He is
to appear in the Dungannon
Magistrates' Court later today.

In a pummelling cross-
examination the prosecution
called Oscar Pistorius's account of
killing his girlfriend "impossible"
overnight, zeroing in on apparent
inconsistencies in key parts of his

Nigel Evans, 56, had been accused of
using his "powerful" political in uence to

But a jury at Preston Crown Court in
north-west England found Evans not
guilty of one count of rape, ve sexual
assaults, one attempted sexual assault
and two indecent assaults.
e rape complainant, 22, had told the
court he was raped and sexually assaulted
by Evans after a dinner party at the
defendant's home in March last year, but
the openly gay lawmaker said the sex was
Peter Wright, Evans's defence lawyer,
suggested the complainant had fabricated
his evidence because he regretted having
sex with a man more than twice his age.
Evans's defence team also pointed out
inconsistencies in witness accounts and
questioned the credibility of several of
the accounts of alleged assaults.
As Evans was cleared, his supporters in
court let out a gasp of relief and some
burst into tears.
Told by the judge that he could leave
the dock, Evans bowed to the jury and
said: " ank you."

A lion in a Hungarian zoo died after it ate
beef infected with the deadly anthrax disease
identi ed in a nearby farm in the eastern region
of the country, national news agency MTI
Citing the local veterinary authority, MTI
said the infected meat came from the village
